Using tonight’s Elk Grove City Council meeting as a launch pad, Steve Detrick announced that he will challenge two-term incumbent Mike Leary for the district 3 seat.
Speaking during the public comment segment of the meeting, Detrick, who was accompanied at the podium by his wife Jan, referenced the 2006 election. ”In 2006 the citizens voted two new members into office," he said. "Now is the time for the citizens to make another change in district 3."
As a founding member and spokesperson of the Elk Grove Coalition Advocating Proper Planning, EGPACC, Detrick was at the forefront of the effort that thwarted (click to see video) the construction of a 24-hour Wal-Mart Super Center on Sheldon Road.
Emboldened by that success, EGCAPP helped push through an ordinance severely restricting further development of big-box retailers in Elk Grove. Detrick said that he would relinquish his role as EGCAPP spokesperson.
Baring other entrants to the race, this will be the first election where Leary faces a single opponent.
In the Elk Grove charter 2000 election, Leary came in second place out of 21 candidates with 9% of the total vote. In 2004 Leary captured 40% of the vote in a field of four. His nearest opponent, Mary Addi captured 36% of the vote.
For his part, Leary had nothing to say about his challenger - he was absent. "I notice that seat is empty tonight," Detrick wryly noted.

The speaker sounds like a real egotistical, yet boring, drip. Did I hear that correctly? Did he really brag about water-skiing skills, as if proficiency at being dragged behind a speedboat was further proof of his civil governance abilities? On the positive side, though, it's nice to see videos on the site. Let their own words damn them.
Mr. Detrick sounds like a well-rounded all American guy. I read one comment that criticised him for mentioning his water skiing ability. He was not bragging. He was applying for a job and made an effort to show who he is and what interests he has. He could have said, "I do not sit on the coutch all day and watch T.V." Is it not better to say, I am a recognised champion water skier???? Sounds like you are just trying to black ball him. Golly gee. YOu much be a REpublican. That is the way they do business.
