In this year's Elk Grove City Council race, so far there are two challengers to three of the incumbents seeking reelection.

With much fanfare in January, Democrat Katerine Maestas announced her bid to unseat two-term council member Republican Sophia Scherman. At her announcement Maestas, brought out local Democrat political heavyweights Darrell Steinberg and David Jones.

More recently, Steve Detrick announced (see video) his challenge to two-term incumbent Mike Leary during a city council meeting. Detrick was accompanied by his wife at the announcement.

Since then, Detrick's fledgling campaign has taken flight. In addition to using the economy and timeliness of e-mail, Detrick has also established, be it presently barren, a campaign website.

Aside from her MySpace page, which could help with the youth vote, as far as we can tell Maestas has not actively started her campaign. (See Google search results.) Granted running a campaign against the deep-pocketed Scherman will require any candidate to carefully manage their funds, but how much would it cost to start an e-mail campaign?

The clock is ticking.
