If we selected officials solely on their ability to raise money, John Connally would have been our 40th President

During the run up to the 1980 presidential primary, former Texas governor John Connally was a prolific fundraiser, easily out distancing Republican foe Ronald Reagen. After the South Carolina primary though, Connally managed to win one delegate. The cost - a mere $11 million.

This should be kept in mind when reading Sophia Scherman's self-congratulatory press release announcing she has raised $30,762 during the first half of the year. According to her press release:
With the race for Elk Grove's District 5 City Council race taking shape, Councilmember Sophia Scherman continues to dominate her opponents in fundraising.

In financial reports released Friday, Scherman crushed her opponents raising $30,720 from January 1st to June 30th. Overall Scherman has raised $120,000 with $62,000 cash on hand.

Our hats are off to Ms. Scherman. She is a prolific fundraiser.

Now that Scherman has taken all that money, just who will she beholden to? The good citizens of Elk Grove or her political patrons?

Who knows, maybe Scherman's fund raising this time around will meet the same fate Connally did against Reagen.
