Former Chief endorses Detrick days after retiring from post

In another blow to Mike Leary's reelection bid, opponent Steve Detrick announced today the endorsement of former Elk Grove police chief Robert Simmons.

"Steve Detrick has the right plan to reduce crime in Elk Grove," said Simmons. "It takes real leadership to bring real change. We need safer streets in Elk Grove and Steve Detrick is the leader we need make that happen."

Detrick has made improved law enforcement a central theme in his quest to unseat two-term incumbent Leary.

Although Detrick has garnered other major public safety endorsements, this one could be particularly stinging for Leary as Simmons retired as chief of the Elk Grove force just four days ago and as such, worked for Leary.

Leary probably didn't help his cause when several months ago he took Simmons to task during a city council meeting over rumored ticket quotas for Elk Grove patrol officers.

“It was brought to my attention that one of the senior staff from the police department went to a briefing and said that revenue from our traffic citations were down considerably from last year, and he suggested they write more citations from the community,” Leary said during the April 23 city council meeting. “I hope we don’t have quotas.”

“Cleary there are no quotas in the police department,” Simmons said in response.
