During normal times, opening a small business can be dicey proposition. In Elk Grove, it is even tougher given our taste for making our purchases at national chains.

Just yesterday this proposition was displayed when I went for a cup of Joe at Sargent’s House of Coffee. Located next to Bel Air on Calvine and Elk Grove-Florin, the shop opened just last June and offered free Wi-Fi.

When I drove up, something looked different, something was missing. The sign above the store was gone. I quickly discovered the store had permanently closed just days before. I could still smell the coffee, or so it seemed.

Obviously Sargents was yet another victim of the tough economy. Another problem Sargent’s faced was competing against large national chains such as Starbuck’s, Peet's and McDonald's.

David doesn’t always win unfortunately.

Given these factors, Sargent’s went after less than six months. When you stop to think about it, Elk Grove has very few home grown businesses left.

As we move toward the all important Holiday season, let’s try to incorporate some of our purchases, and restaurant meals, not only in Elk Grove, but in those locally owned businesses that are quickly becoming an endangered species in Elk Grove.

You should try It's A Grind... Best coffee in the world!

I'm sure it is and I realize they are franchises.

It is just too bad an independent business had to shut down. While we still have some independent restaurants here, we really don't have many independent retailers left.

Amazing to me is as retail stores close, some new businesses of the most dubious and frivolous sort are opening. Im Marysville for instance, there is a new full service car wash being built at Yuba and 12th streets in Marysville -- cheek by jowl with an existing self-service car wash. It would seem to me among the first thing one would cut out in hard times would be $10-$12 car washes. If you really don't want to wash the car yourself, pay the $10 to the teen at home and put the theory of economic circulation to work for yourself.
