The narrow bridge crossing Laguna Creek on West Stockton Boulevard will be
getting a much needed makeover beginning in May.

Construction of the West Stockton Boulevard at Laguna Creek Bridge Project will begin on May 4 and will continue through November 15. During this time, W. Stockton Blvd. will be closed to traffic in both directions at the Laguna Creek Bridge. Northbound and southbound motorists will be directed to use the following detours:

Northbound Traffic – Laguna Blvd. west, right on Big Horn Blvd., right on Lewis Stein Rd.
Southbound Traffic – Lewis Stein Rd. south, left on Big Horn Blvd., left on Laguna Blvd.

Roadwork notification and message boards will be posted in
advance and during construction for the traveling public. Detours will be in effect until the project is complete, targeted for November 2009.

The project will construct a wider bridge that will include a sidewalk, a southbound right-turn lane, and a northbound left-turn lane. The improvements will also accommodate high flows in Laguna Creek.

The West Stockton Boulevard Bridge, which crosses over Laguna Creek, was constructed in 1956 and has been identified as “functionally obsolete” by the City, the California Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), due to its narrow width.

• Features of the new West Stockton Boulevard Bridge:
• Widened bridge will accommodate two through traffic lanes (one in each direction)
• Provisions for turn pockets
• Class II bike lanes
• A raised sidewalk on the west side of the bridge
• Bridge railings
