Acting United States Attorney Lawrence G. Brown announced today that Eric Gene Piotrowski, 41, of Elk Grove, Calif., was arrested this morning for misdemeanor and felony criminal offenses related to falsely claiming he was awarded a Silver Star military decoration and for lying to federal agents.

This case is the product of an extensive investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the cooperation of the California Department of Veterans Affairs.

According to Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez, who is prosecuting the case, Piotrowski, is charged with claiming that he was awarded a Silver Star for “gallantry in action during combat operations against hostile forces” in Operation Desert Storm. Specifically, Piotrowski falsely claimed that in 1991 during an Iraqi counter-attack in Operation Desert Storm, “He exposed himself to direct enemy fire while providing suppressive fires to cover anti-tank team, which was maneuvering to destroy an Iraqi T-62 tank.”

The complaint alleges that Piotrowski did not see military action in Operation Desert Storm, and that he purchased the Silver Star Citation and medal via the Internet. Under false pretenses, on December 1, 2007, Piotrowski was formally recognized for the Silver Star by the Undersecretary for the California Department of Veterans Affairs. Piotrowski is currently employed by the California Exposition Center Police Department.

Piotrowski made an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Dale A. Drozd today.

Protect and Serve??? Very scarry that a man such as this is a cop and protecting us!!! How could someone take away from those who are heros and really protect us...

The guy is a Cal Expo Police Officer not an Elk Grove Police Officer, just wanted to get that out there since it wasnt mentioned in the article.

That explains why he is/was a Cal-Expo Police Officer and not an Elk Grove Officer..

Definitely a Munchousen Syndrome candidate. Those of us who know/knew him are not surprised. Unfortunately, all of us have known of or been close to people who have "surprised us". Shame on them not us. At the least they betray the natural trust of friends with falsehood. But to falsely imbued your background for such purposes is pathological.

Additionally, there is no place in law enforcement for such. Law enforcement depends upon integrity and chain of custody at all levels. Credibility is key. This man has exemplified what is wrong in a system that demands integral standards.

His law "enforcement" days are over

What a shame. I don't know how people like him sleep at night.

This is not Munchausen at all. Not even close. But he is egocentric with low self-esteem.

Lying POS. I guess he know what the Stolen Valor Act is now.

The headline of the article is misleading and KCRA knows it. But the is accurate as it does not claim he is EGPD.

Munchausen Syndrome is not limited to false health issues. This syndrome is also found in the rare instance of wayward firefighters when they have set fires and tried to become a hero after the fact. The syndrome originated with Baron Munchausen's antics. Google Baron Munchausen and see the similarities with the Cal Expo cop.

It is very said what this has probably done to his family and friends. People like this effect so many, but only think of themselves and how to LIE their way through. Lying to the FBI now that takes a world of BRAINS. A cop - sworn to uphold the law - is he kidding. The innocent ones are the people really hurt as well as the real military heroes.
