Elk Grove News has learned that the Elk Grove Citizen has laid off its editor, Jeff Forward. The Citizen is owned by Herburger Publications, Inc. of Galt, Calif.

In an e-mail to EGN, Forward said he received word today of his lay-off. Forward said he was “surprised” but is also well aware of the systemic problems facing newspapers.

Forward said that it was also his understanding that a reporter at another Herburger newspaper, The Grapevine (Rancho Cordova), was also laid off today. EGN is unable to verify this additional lay-off at this time.

Forward is the second editorial person to be furloughed by the Citizen this year. In March, staff reporter Bobby Wilson was laid-off.

Its sad to see the Citizen so politically protective of City Government that they sack their own people for doing what newspapers are supposed to do- proper investigative reporting. The excuse "for economic reasons" just doesn't wash. So much for trust and transparency at any level. The imploded Mall has become an appropriate symbol for a once-wonderful town. And newspaper.
