One of Congress member Dan Lungren’s favorite topics of discussion, aside from immigration, are the so-called “law and order” issues.

Through the years Lungren has tried to develop a tough-on-crime reputation. This is an image Lungren has long sought to burnish.

Lungren developed this image starting from his first stint in Congress, his time as California ’s Attorney General from 1991 through 1999 through his second stint in congress representing our district.

During his time as attorney general Lungren supported a number of popular laws including "Megan's Law," "3-Strikes-and-You're-Out," "Sexual Anti-Predator Act," and the " California 's Safe Schools Plan."

Republican Lungren has also used this get-tough on criminal rhetoric effectively against a host of opponents. He has never been bashful about bludgeoning his opponents as soft on crime.

But when it come to helping cash-strapped communities like Elk Grove get some extra cops on the street to improve public safety, does Lungren’s bluster match his deeds?

Opposes funding extra cops for safe streets; Scrooge like?

A recent review of Lungren’s recent voting record however shows that while he might talk tough about crime, when it comes to helping communities like Elk Grove get more feet on the street and roundup the bad guys, he is downright Ebenezer Scrooge-like.

In voting against last winter’s stimulus package, Lungren opposed $1 billion in funding to hire and rehire police officers.

Bah Humbug!

Not be out-Scrooged, Lungren just today thumbed his nose at an appropriations bill (The Consolidated Appropriations Act of FY 2010 (HR 3288) that will provide $3.71 billion for grants to aid local and state law enforcement and crime victims.

Bah Humbug!

With the Christmas season upon us, we can only hope that Lungren sees a vision of what our future would look like if congress was populated with more Scrooge-like people who talk tough on crime but actually oppose crime preventions efforts in the very communities they are meant to serve.

We don’t expect that to happened though. The alternative is to elect someone who more accurately reflects the values and concerns of the people of Elk Grove, and it’s not ‘Ebenezer’ Lungren.

Let them put a bill up that has $1 billion for hiring police and none of the other junk and he would vote for it in a second. Its the other $799,000,000,000 in the stimulus bill that was the problem.

As for HR 3288, at almost $500,000,000,000 (that's billion) and 10% higher than last years appropriations bill. Voting yes for 5% of bill doesnt' make too much sense. Lets appropriate funds for crime fighting and see how he does.

The fact that they put these into bills that certain folks can't vote for (that representative government thing) so that "you" can later say, "look they are soft of crime" as an attack is a part of the problem. It works on both sides of the aisle, but right now we are in the midst of "hope and change".
