Another challenge for the Cosumnes River

While many people in Elk Grove and Wilton have marked April 14 on their calendar for the Elk Grove City Council Meeting where the council will discuss the possibility of removing the Cosumnes River floodplain from the city’s sphere of influence (SOI) application, on that same day another meeting over the future of that river will take place in downtown Sacramento.

That meeting, to be held in front of the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, will ask the supervisors to reverse a decision by the Sacramento County Planning Commission allowing an expansion of the Mustang Airport. On February 22 the planning commission approved a conditional used permit despites county staff’s recommendation to deny it.

The Mustang Airport is located on Riley Road just north of Arno Road in South Sacramento County. Expansion plans include lengthening of the runway and the installation of 60 rental hangars and 25 aircraft tiedowns.

Several environmental groups including The Nature Conservancy and Ducks Unlimited oppose the plan and will urge Supervisors to reverse the decision. They cite the airports’ proximity to the Cosumnes River Preserve and it’s affect on several nearby sensitive wildlife habitat areas as part of their opposition.

The hearing starts at 6:00 pm in the Supervisors chambers located at 700 H Street, Sacramento.
