During next week’s regular meeting, the Elk Grove City Council will consider 25 community service grants from various groups hoping to get a share of the $277,405 budgeted by the city for fiscal year 2011.

In a report prepared by city Budget Manager Katy Baumbach, it has been recommended that 15 of the applicants requests be granted.

The largest recommended allocation is for the Elk Grove Senior Center who would be awarded $99,995. If the council approves the request, the Senior Center’s grant would be the same amount granted for the current fiscal year.

Among the recommended requests, four are new grants. They include $5,000 for the local Cal Ripken baseball league to facilitate the hosting of a regional tournament; $2,000 for the Western Day festival; $10,000 for the Strauss Festival of Elk Grove; and $1,000 for the Elk Grove Rotary for an at-risk youth mentoring program.

Among those recommended to receive increased funding are the Elk Grove Food Bank Services who would receive $8,000 more funding bring total to $33,000; and Project R.I.D.E. an increase of $260 for a total of $16,910.

Grants that would decrease if approved include the Elk Grove Adult Community Training whose funding would drop to $2,000 from $15,000; Elk Grove Community Garden and Learning Center whose funding would drop to $3,000 from $3,800; Elk Grove Police Activity League’s funding would drop to $35,000 from $37,010; Elk Grove Teen Center would decrease by $1,000 to $35,000; and the Animal Rescue League would receive no funding after receiving $2,500 for the current fiscal year.

If approved as recommended, total funding for the next fiscal year would increase from $267,955 to $277,405. There are a total of $860,926 in grant requests.
