During today’s 2010 Project of the Year Awards luncheon, the Sacramento Chapter of the American Public Works Association announced Laguna Creek Trail Bridge Project in Elk Grove as a Project of the Year Award recipient.

The project, a collaboration among the City of Elk Grove, Elk Grove Unified School District and Elk Grove Trails Committee, was awarded in the large agency, parks and trails project category and of $500,000 to $2 million division. It was completed in September 2009.

The bridge is over Laguna Creek, connecting to the Laguna Creek Trail between Ringe Circle and Porto Rosa Street. The project provides a footbridge to allow safe and direct access to Jack Hill Park and connects Laguna Creek Trail on both sides of the creek. The bridge also serves as a safe route for schoolchildren to two nearby schools.

This project closes a gap in trail routes in Elk Grove and complements several other developing trail projects in the region.

The project was selected based on physical structures and facilities, construction management and control techniques, safety performance, environmental considerations, community relations and unusual accomplishments.
