Public official knighted Woman of the Year by EGC
A recent story that appeared in the Elk Grove Citizen named Elk Grove City Manager Laura Gill as the 2010 Woman of the Year.
The honor bestowed by The Citizen is most curious.
In the past these type of honors were bestowed by The Citizen for people who, through mostly unpaid volunteer efforts, added something significant to the community. Working on the Strauss Festival, helping at risk youths, establishing a food bank or aiding domestic violence victims are the type of activities that come to mind.
Instead, The Citizen bestowed this honor on a public official whose job, which is generously compensated by the taxpayers of Elk Grove, is to do what she is being commended for. This is the job she is being so generously compensated for - what is so special about that? Furthermore, the 2010 Woman of the Year doesn't even live in Elk Grove.
We don't begrudge Gill for the honor hoisted on her by The Citizen. It is just curious how the Herburger organization can bestow this honor on Gill when there are all sorts of un-sung heroes in the community working as unpaid volunteers who are more deserving of this honor.

No disrespect to Ms. Gill, but these "___________ of the Year" honors are done solely by Roy Herberger and are not connected to the City at all. Several years ago, I was told exactly how these people are selected and I think it is ridiculous that the perception that this is some sort of "official" recognition is allowed to stand.
I have my own theory about how this one came about, but will keep it to myself at the moment.
