The Elk Grove Community Connection (EGCC) will be holding a town hall meeting on a proposed sports complex planned as a major component of the city of Elk Grove Civic Center project.

This important meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at Elk Grove City Hall council chambers beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a meet ‘n greet networking reception. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.

This forum will be co-hosted and facilitated by Elk Grove Mayor Vice Jim Cooper and City Council member Gary Davis. “The potential for an Elk Grove Sports Complex to infuse our local economy is huge," Council Member Gary Davis said. "The timing could not be better as we are working to build a strong and balanced community.”

Special guests include Cosumnes Community Services District Board of Director Rod Brewer.

Presentations will include examples of highly successful sports complexes. Topics to be covered include: Are there economic benefits to Elk Grove?; How long would it take for Elk Grove to build a sports complex?; What ideas do you have regarding a sports complex in Elk Grove? The meeting will also include a panel discussion from the various Elk Grove Leagues. After presentations, there will be an interactive question and answer period.

“Sports, and especially youth sports, has been my life-long passion,” states Cooper. “Our goal is to bring a state-of-the-art sports complex to Elk Grove that will be the ultimate recreational and competitive venue for adult and youth sports, with large competitive tournaments that will attract visitors from all over the State of California and beyond.”

“The EGCC,” explains founding member Connie Conley “is a community group comprised of Elk Grove residents with diverse opinions but with the one goal; to bring residents and their leaders together, working to build a renewed and more powerful, sustainable community where respect, partnership and connection are at the heart of Elk Grove’s way of life.”

The topic of a sports complex is interesting. Isn't the city of Sacramento, with all it's regional pull of over 2 million people stuggling with this same issue? Perhaps apples to oranges in that Sacto is taking mainly about a basketball venue with some entertainment; Elk Grove seems to be talking soccer or softball fields. But this type of action takes lots of money; money which we don't have. Unless this community group is going to kick in some funds? Why is a community group holding this meeting? Seems the city, if they are on board with this issue, should be holding the meeting. I am suspect anytime this group gets involved. Are we concerned about the naming rights if anything does get built?? I can see it now "The EGCC Fields". Tread lightly Elk Grove. Tread lightly.

The ICMA, the International City/County Management Association, released a report back in 2008 saying that city and county governments should rely on the expertise of their citizenry regarding public participation and involvement to save money and allow citizens to get more involved where they can because tough economic times were going to hit government hard and they had to do more with less.

While the above post may disagree, the EGCC has put on over 15 meetings, all standing room only. One previous example is the meeting on the civic center. The city of Elk Grove held four of them back in 2008, at the cost of $10K –- and that was just the fee for the professional facilitator -- with a total attendance of 27 people. One of those meetings was cancelled because only one person attended

The EGCC was approached with this information and it was outrageous to us that only 27 people had input into what amenities the civic center should have. So we put on a civic center summit meeting – partnering with the city on this one and several others that year -- with then Mayor Pat Hume as the host and facilitator. The meeting included excellent presentations by Sarah Johnson and Pam Johns of PMC. It was from that meeting that the poll was taken and factored into what “we” want in a civic center. That meeting was standing room only, out the door.

This town hall meeting on the sports complex is a natural succession as a follow up to the civic center meeting. What do the citizens want in a state-of-the-art sports complex?

And the cost of the civic center meeting including the reception hosted by the entire council, thank you gifts and the raffle prize was $500.

We plan these meetings, turn them over to the experts, and then take a seat in the back of the room.

As far as the name, “Elk Grove Sports Complex” seems like the logical choice here.

You can call this meeting whatever you want, but the HEADLINE says, "Elk Grove City Council Members" and that is exactly what this citizenpraten wants to see....each and every elected official attending, not a couple playing the political game. It is my understanding that they have all been doing research and attending meetings in regards to this proposed Sports Complex and I, for one, expect to hear from them ALL. QUOTE: "We plan these meetings, turn them over to the experts, and then take a seat in the back of the room". I see no EXPERTS listed!
