The Elk Grove Police Department is now investigating a double homicide when it was confirmed that 78 year old, Gurmej Atwal, died Friday while still in the hospital. It is believed he succumbed to the gunshot wounds he sustained last month while walking with his long-time friend, 65 year old Surinder Singh, on E. Stockton Blvd. Mr. Singh was also a victim of the shooting and died at the scene.
The two men were enjoying an afternoon walk during the 4:00 hour on Friday, March 4, 2011, when they were tragically gunned down in the area of E. Stockton and Geneva Point Drive. Officers and emergency personnel responded to a 911 emergency call and discovered the two men suffering from gunshot wounds to their upper torso. Surinder Singh was fatally wounded, while Gurmej Atwal was critically wounded and remained so until yesterday.
Elk Grove Police Chief Robert M. Lehner issued the following statement late Friday evening:
"Our heartfelt condolences are with the family of Mr. Atwal. All of us here at the City of Elk Grove were inspired by his valiant battle for life. The entire community was pulled together by this tragedy and we all mourn his loss."
Detectives continue to follow-up and investigate every lead that comes in. Based on witness information, detectives are asking for help from the community in locating a vehicle that was seen driving in the area after the shooting. The vehicle is described as being a tan or light brown 1999 to 2003 Ford F150 pickup truck.
If you have any information about this vehicle or have information regarding this crime you are encouraged to call the Elk Grove Police Department Communication Center (916) 714-5115 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP (4357).
