A Sacramento man jumped out of the car he was driving late last night during a vehicle pursuit with Elk Grove Police.

According to police reports, officers responded to the area of Pipit Way and Tree Swallow Circle regarding a suspicious occupied vehicle that was seen driving in the area. While officers were on their way to the call, the reporting person indicated that the vehicle was now parked on Pipit Way.

Two of the occupants were observed exiting the vehicle and walking over to a residence in the 3300 block of Tree Swallow Circle. The caller also indicated that they heard the sound of glass breaking and believed that a residential burglary was taking place.

When officers arrived, they located the vehicle and discovered that it was occupied by 18-year old Steven Kelly who was seated in the driver’s seat. When officers attempted to conduct an enforcement stop, Kelly reportedly drove away from officers and did not yield resulting in a vehicle pursuit.

During the pursuit, the suspect slowed down, opened the driver’s side door and exited the vehicle while it was still moving. Kelly this then fled on foot as the vehicle continued moving.

The vehicle eventually collided with a tree at Nestling Circle and Aurelia Court. Officers discovered three women in the back seat of the vehicle who were inside the vehicle at the time of the collision. Officers established a perimeter in an effort to locate Kelly and the male front seat passenger who had fled on foot.

Additional resources (helicopter, K9) were called in to assist. Officers discovered that the residence in the 3300 block of Tree Swallow Circle had been burglarized. Officers eventually located Kelly who was arrested then transported to the main jail.
