Risk of West Nile virus continues to be high in South Sacramento county especially in the areas of Wilton and Elk Grove. The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District confirmed today that 34 new mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile virus.
“We continue to see an increase in virus activity in these areas and the risk of human transmission is high,” said David Brown, District Manager. “Residents need to be aware and do everything they can to ensure they are not being bitten by mosquitoes because anyone can become infected” added Brown. Though no local human WNV cases have been reported in our area, in recent days 10 human cases have been registered throughout the state, mainly in the Central Valley.
As a response to the recent findings and heightened activity, District staff will inspect the area for mosquito breeding sources, continue with extensive trapping and surveillance as well as ground based truck mounted fogging in the areas of most activity to reduce the adult mosquito populations.
The District continues to urge residents to inspect their homes for any stagnant water and asks for public cooperation in identifying potential mosquito breeding sources.

Level 2--Sacramento County: 26 dead birds, 0 sentinel chickens, 83 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus to date.
Yolo County: No activity has been registered to date.
Practice the District D’s of Mosquito Prevention:
DRAIN standing water that may produce mosquitoes.
DAWN and DUSK are times to avoid being outdoors.
DRESS appropriately be wearing long sleeves and pants when outside.
DEFEND yourself by using an effective insect repellent. Make sure to follow label directions!
DOOR and window screens should be in good working condition.
