In what can be a sign of the financial challenges facing municipalities, the Elk Grove City Council decided against relocating a welcome sign during Wednesday night's city council meeting.

The new welcome sign in question is located on the northeast corner of the Sheldon Rd. and Hwy. 99 interchange. The sign is located on the northbound side of the highway and is visible to southbound drivers.

During their presentation, city staff that said that sign was located there because of CalTrans requirements and subsequently got permission to relocate the sign on the southwest corner of the interchange. City Capital Improvement Manager Rick Carter said the relocation would cost $50,000.

Carter further explained that the item was placed on the agenda because the city has received comments from citizens saying the sign was not visible to southbound drivers on Hwy. 99.

During their deliberation Councilman Jim Cooper asked how many people complained about the sign's location. Carter said that according to Sacramento's TV Channel 13 (which did a report, see video here.) they received numerous inquiries and that he knew of one coming into city hall.

"Really, because Channel 13 calls," Cooper said.

Cooper went on to say the city has more urgent needs and spending the money to relocate the sign sends the wrong message.

The council did not act on the matter and the motion died.

How can people complain about something they don't even know about? You can not see it! I watched the news bit about it and then watched for the sigh. I didn't see it the first time; but I did the second time I drove by when the traffic was lighter; however if I had not know what it said ahead of time I still wouldn't have an idea. What a HUGE WASTE of taxpayers $$$$
Of course; it is Elk Grove!
