Officers see suspect while investigating other crime

An Elk Grove man was arrested this afternoon after he threatened store security employees with a knife yesterday.

According to Elk Grove Police reports, 42-year-old Gaylin Douglas was observed shoplifting at the Burlington Coat Factory by loss prevention prevention personnel. Douglas reportedly concealed merchandise and approached a register, paid for one piece of merchandise, but made no attempt to pay for the other items he had concealed.

Once Douglas exited the store, he was approached by the agents who identified themselves and when they attempted to detain him, the suspect pulled out and a folding knife with a four-inch blade and took an aggressive stance. Fearing for their safety, the agents did not advance.

Douglas then drove away in a black Mercedes and one of the agents was able to take a picture of the getaway vehicle but police were unable to locate the vehicle or the owner at the registered address.

This morning EGPD officers conducted a vehicle stop on the black Mercedes involved in the robbery on Hwy 99 at Florin Road. Although the driver of the vehicle was not the suspect, while officers were conducting follow-up, they observed Douglas driving another vehicle and initiated an enforcement stop on Hwy. 99 at Sheldon Road.

Officers detained Douglas and a search of his vehicle led to the discovery of stolen merchandise and a folding pocket knife. Douglas was arrested and transported to the main jail.
