In a congressional race that has gathered national attention, Dr. Ami Bera, M.D. officially opened his campaign headquarters office in Elk Grove yesterday afternoon.
Bera is running against incumbent Republican Dan Lungren for California's newly drawn Seven Congressional District. This is Bera's the second run against Lungren.
Speaking before close to a hundred enthusiastic supporters, Bera noted that in 2010 he came close to unseating Lungren in an election where Republican took back control of the House of Representatives.
"We went against a Republican tidal wave and we almost won," Bera said. "We are now running in a much better district."
The newly drawn Seventh District now encompasses a more urban population including all of Elk Grove that Bera said has more registered Democrats than Republicans. In 2010 Bera faced Lungren for the Third Congressional District that included more rural areas that have typically been Republican strongholds.
Bera praised his volunteer supporters and noted that in 2010 they made over 800,000 personal contacts and said they hope to surpass that number for this cycle. The native Californian noted he has been humbled by the outpouring of support he and his family have received in his effort to win a congressional election and said it is a real team effort.
"This our race," Bera added.

Almost beat Lungren?
7% is a blowout in politics.
Almost winning would be like McClintock V Charlie Brown in 2008 which in an overwhelming Republican District McClintock won with just 0.6% of the vote.
Compared to that Pelosi's candidate was demolished.
It is time for Lungren to be retired from politics.
