If you thought your mailboxes overflowed with political mailers or your land-line's voice mail bombarded by robo-calls in 2010 or 2008, with the floodgates of SuperPac's open as a result of the Citizen's United case, Elk Grove voters will be further overwhelmed because it lies at the center of one of the nation's most closely watched congressional races.
We of course are referring to the race between incumbent Republican Congressman Dan Lungren and the presumptive Democratic candidate, Dr. Ami. Berra. With the newly drawn Seventh Congressional District that has a slight Democratic registration advantage, the race has drawn national interest and Super Pac's.
Lungren has already had the U.S. Chamber of Commerce air TV commercials lauding him for his support of business and his opposition to health-care reform. Lungren was one of 10 Republican congressional incumbents who the Chamber has already aired TV ad's for.
For Bera there is already one SuperPac that has committed resources to getting him elected. The Credo SuperPac has included Lungren in their "Take Down The Tea Party Ten."
Calling him the "Santorum of California," Credo argues that Lungren "has stood for Tea Party extremism and radical assaults on equality."
So as we move closer to November, expect this bombardment of Super Pac negative ads against both candidates on top of all the political literature, soundbites and spin. Just think, only seven more months to go!
UPDATE The CREDO SuperPac contacted EGN to emphasize they will be opening an office in the district to support grassroot efforts and will be "hiring staff to engage local activists and help power a grassroots campaign to Rep. Lungren. We’re also not focused on electing anyone – the “Take Down the Tea Party Ten” campaign is about retiring members of Congress we feel hold extremist Tea Party positions." They will not be doing any advertising.
