With one store in town already and the looming possibility that another will soon call Elk Grove home, Elk Grove Police were again dispatched to Wal Mart in response to a shoplifting incident yesterday afternoon.

According to police reports, officers responded to a call regarding a shoplifting that had taken place at the Elk Grove Blvd. store. Officers were able to locate a white four-door vehicle that the suspected shoplifter fled the store in.

After stopping the vehicle, officers detained 18-year-old Treshawn Rogers of Sacramento who was positively identified by Wal Mart security personnel.

The stolen merchandise was also recovered inside the vehicle and a records check revealed that the suspect also had an active felony warrant out for his arrest. Rogers was arrested and transferred to the county jail.

One of the objections to building another Wal Mart store in Elk Grove has been the chains identity as a crime magnet that drains local resources. As a result of this public relations problem, six years ago the chain decided not to pursue shoplifters who stole merchandise valued below $25.

Nonetheless, with the seemingly imminent opening of another Wal Mart in Elk Grove, our law resources will likely get more calls for service from both stores.

Hey, instead of "Running Of The Elk" each year, we could have "Running Of The Shoplifter!" Line 'em up at the front door of the old Walmart, then have them race to the front door of the new Walmart. First one there wins a plasma TV!

The writer of this story obviously has a slanted view of Wal-Mart
