Scherman enters Elk Grove mayoral race.
In a press release issued this afternoon, Elk Grove Council member Sophia Scherman announced she will enter the race to become Elk Grove's first directly elected mayor.

Scherman, a three term council member and one of two original council members since Elk Grove incorporated in 2000, will enter the race against fellow council member Gary Davis, Jerry Braxmeyer and Greg Higley.

Scherman's decision to enter the mayoral race comes on the heels of her third place finish in the primary race for the California State Assembly. In her statement Scherman cited her experience and commitment to Elk Grove.

“It’s obvious that Elk Grove needs leadership that won’t take orders from Sacramento and will focus on creating jobs and a vibrant economy,” Scherman said. “I have the background and experience to help move our city forward and do what is right for the people of Elk Grove."

“We have many projects like the community center and the languishing Elk Grove mall that need someone who will work day and night to provide the vision and leadership to get the job done," Scherman said. "Our next Mayor needs to be focused on the future of our city.”

So is Jerry Braxmeyer pulling out the mayoral race? So much for political loyalty, Jerry, you support Sophia for Assembly and she supports your candidacy for Mayor.

Same goes for Sophia's protégé, Pat Hume. Is Hume going to pull his Braxmeyer support in favor of Sophia?

Braxmeyer is not pulling out of the race for Mayor. He is one of the best candidates.

She comes in a distant third for Assembly. She didn't even carry Elk Grove. Gary Davis has nothing to worry about. Gary has plenty of money, all the people that usually give money to Sophia have already endorsed and contributed to Gary and Braxmeyer is a novice with no support. All Sophia is doing is making herself look pathetic a politician termed out desperately trying to stay in power

Ms. Scherman's entry into the race will certainly add color and flare to what might have been an otherwise lopsided affair. Two seasoned politicians and two political novices should make for some interesting claims and counter-claims as we move towards November.

Sophia's press release says, as of today's announcement, she is "the immediate frontrunner."

Seriously Sophia? Who do expect believes that piece of fiction!

After 12 years, I thought we had suffered enough. Apparently I was wrong.

Please CCSD, name a park after Sophia so she will finally retire!

Actually if Mr. Davis is elected, it is my understanding that the city council could either call for a special election or appoint someone to fill out Mr Davis' term should he be elected. I am not entirely sure this is the case, but it seems I have read this before.

Aside from that, the cost of running a special election (should that be what has to legally happen) is the cost of having a representative democracy.

I think Sophia is a good person. I live in her district and I contacted her for concerns a few times and she responded quickly and got the neighborhood problem fix. In my case it was some garbage dumped on the street. Isn't what they should be doing?

It is the small things for constituents that people don't see that really matter and Sophia has never done my neighborhood wrong. I'll vote for her.

I will be voting for Ms. Scherman, but for a different reason.

I live in Mr. Davis' district and do not want the council to appoint someone to represent me or for the city to spend $200,000. +/- for a special election. Quiet happy the way it is now. Also afraid of CC & Co. highlighting every ribbon cutting or public function the city has.

Sophia has been very helpful with issues in my neighborhood. She helped to correct a blighted property and was instrumental in getting a reduced speed limit on a section of Grantline Road. She has held regular open meetings to solicit and discuss issues of both personal and community concern. She takes the time listen.

looks like she's running as sophia sherman now and not sophia gonzales sherman..good luck, either way, she's done....

just when we felt safe in elk grove she does it again. Some people say you have fixed problems for them. But in reguards to city hall you have created a mess..Gary is the same. we need someone new.

So far we have enthusiastic endorsements for a mayoral candidate whose significant achievements over a span of 12 years in office include taking out the trash and implementing fiat speed limits. Woohoo! Count Me In!
