The City of Elk Grove broke ground on a special waste collection center yesterday morning.

Located on Grantline Road just east of Highway 99, the collection center will accommodate typical household hazards like car batteries, motor oil as well as electronic waste. Currently Elk Grove residents take these type of waste items to facilities in Sacramento County.

"The average household has an average of 100 pounds of hazardous waste," Mayor Jim Cooper told the audience on hand for the ceremony. "In May of next year it will be a whole lot easier for Elk Grove residents to dispose of this waste."

Along with Cooper other dignitaries on hand were council members Steve Detrick and Sophia Scherman, Sacramento County Supervisor Don Nottoil's Chief of Staff Pat Braziel and Steve Peterson, chair of the Solid Waste Advisory Board.

"We applaud what you are doing here," Peterson said. "This is the perfect facility to adapt to what is going on today."

The city is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification for the site. LEED would provide independent, third party verification that a facility is designed to achieve a host of environmental goals.

The facility is scheduled to be completed in May, 2013.
