Groundbreaking Tomorrow For Elk Grove Special Waste Center

From old TV sets and computer monitors to paint cans and batteries, most of us have items in our garage or home that are considered household hazardous waste.

The City of Elk Grove is beginning construction of a new facility that will allow residents to dispose of household hazardous waste locally. Tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. city officials will break ground on a $4.6 million Special Waste Collection Center located at 10401 Grant Line Road.

The Special Waste Collection Center is scheduled to open in May of 2013. When open, the facility will accommodate typical household hazardous wastes and recyclables like antifreeze, batteries, cooking oil, used motor oil, fluorescent light bulbs, pharmaceuticals, gasoline and electronic waste.

Currently Elk Grove’s household hazardous waste is transported by residents to facilities in the city or county of Sacramento. When open, the new facility will improve environmental impact, make recycling more convenient and encourage proper disposal of hazardous materials.

The Special Waste Collection Center site was formerly a dilapidated industrial site. The City of Elk Grove is redeveloping the site and 100 percent of the previous concrete, asphalt and steel buildings will be recycled for future reuse.

In addition, the City is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Gold Certification for the site. LEED Certification would provide independent, third party verification that a building was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health, sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
