For more than 38 years, local Elk Grove residents in need have been served by Elk Grove Food Bank Services. This year the need was greater than ever with high unemployment and a struggling economy as families, individuals, and especially seniors signed up for food assistance and other services.

On Thursday, December 20 at Elk Grove Food Bank people lined up to get turkeys, hams and all the trimmings, along with toys for the kids. By the end of the day, volunteers working in the cold gave out over 500 food boxes and gifts.

The annual giveaway is culmination of local donors, Food For Families, local businesses, grocery stores and other organizations who contribute their time, funds, food and services to the Food Bank.

Elk Grove Food Bank, a local non-profit organization serving families and individuals in need, was founded in 1974. Over time EGFBS expanded to meet the growing needs of the community and now provides seven comprehensive programs in Elk Grove. The mission of the Food Bank is “to preserve dignity against the many faces of hunger and human need.”

Additional EGFBS information is available at www.elkgrovefoodbank.org.
