Wasting no time, Elk Grove City Council candidate Nancy Chaires reacted to the revelation that her one-time political ally and fellow Democrat Steve Ly has filed candidate intention papers seeking the same seat by releasing a video showing Ly praising her.

The comments, in the video posted below titled "Thank you Mr. Ly," were delivered last January by Ly when Chaires had sought appointment to the District 4 seat they now both seek in the November general election. Although Chaires initially had the support of Mayor Gary Davis and Council Member Jim Cooper, Davis abandoned Chaires in favor of current council member Bob Trigg.

As a centerpiece of her campaign, Chaires cites her six-plus years on the city's planning commission. Chaires also takes a jab at Ly, who was first elected to the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees in a November, 2012 landslide victory.

"The work I've done for several years on the Planning Commission demonstrates my commitment to public service," Chaires said. "I am not running for City Council as a stepping stone to higher office or another elected position."

When contacted, Ly did not comment on the video but noted that he has opened an exploratory committee to run for the vacant city council seat.

"Having already earned the support of Mayor Gary Davis, I look forward to showing the residents of Elk Grove who is best equipped to move our city forward," he said. .

Riding the coat tails of Mayor Gary Davis? What a poor misguided soul! That and 50 cents will get ya a cup of Grace Coffee.

Actually I find it unfortunate that Ms. Chaires would head down this road. I thought she was serious in her statement of "Integrity, Accountability, Respect."

Where's that young man, Jeff Owen, that was so impressive last year during the big shoot-out at city hall? That's the kind of person we need on this disfunctional city council...not more people making this a political fight that we have to listen to for months on end.

Typical Sacramento politics from Chaires' husband. Ly stated that of the applicants Charies was the best selection. I didn't hear him say that she was the best person for the position.

As far as riding Gary's coat tails, why not? Gary received almost 50% of the vote with 6 people running. That is unheard of. It was also Gary's volunteers that walked houses for Ly and got him elected.

This is going to get ugly and dirty quick, you might just see someone else enter and fly under the radar letting these two take each other out.

If nothing else, Ly's entry into this race adds validity to the old axiom about politics and friends - if you want a friend in politics, get a dog!

Yes, I second Jeff Owens. Just what we need. A new, fresh start for this council. Already tired of Chaires and her little political machine. Once, I thought she would turn out OK...but she fooled me. Shame on me! Jeff...we need you!

It was Steve Ly’s campaign team who dropped all of Gary Davis’ bags all over the city during the 2012 campaign. Davis even thanked Ly during his victory speech, commenting on his ground team.

Also, didn’t Davis say in the Elk Grove Citizen after the Bob Trigg appointment he would support Nancy. In fact, Davis is quoted as saying the following, “Davis said he has not wavered in his support for Chaires. “I still support Nancy for the seat and I’m going to campaign for her in 2014,” the mayor said after Trigg was appointed.

So what has changed Gary? Is that Steve Ly was going to run against you for mayor and instead you talked him into running against Nancy Chaires?

Davis threw Chaires under the bus to save his own political a**!

Looking at the video, I think it's about holding Mr. Ly accountable.

It's unfortunate that Mr. Ly has lack of integrity and respect to the voters that elected him to the school board and for going back on his commitment to serve on the school board.

I think holding him accountable is the right thing to do.

Chaires campaign slogan-"Integrity, Accountability, Respect"? Hollow and meaningless, just like the other candidate slogans, like "stronger neighborhoods".

Integrity means she will follow the laws of public officials if she is elected. Yay!

Accountability means she will properly disclose her financial interests and campaign spending, and her actual votes are recorded. So?

Respect...this is getting to be too much to swallow! Let the campaign season begin and insult our intelligence!

Thank you to the anonymous posters above for your encouragement and support. I too am tired of the political gamesmanship. I just want someone who truly believes and cares about our city and it's residents.

Something to think about...

Jeff,
take your time; think this through and then realize you're exactly what this council and this city needs. Someone who asks questions and gets real answers. No someone who "thanks staff" and then goes along to get along. We need a keen eye and a sharp mind. We get both of these things in you. Please consider your possible service to our city.

Jeff,
Thanks for posting your honest response. The political gamesmanship is very very tiring..as is going to city council meetings and hearing the same things over and over. So I do very much understand your position. Like you I very much want someone who truly cares about the entire city and its RESIDENTS. I had hoped we had received that in two individuals I supported and worked for...big disappointment and very eye opening. The rules of the game for politics needs to be changed! We need some game changers. Jeff you could do that. I believe you have the backing that would make it happen.

The mere fact that Ly and Chaires were once allies and in support of one another and now are mudslinging shows the kind of integrity and character they each possess. And you can loop Davis in with the group as shown by his unwillingness to support Nancy fully previously when it came down to crunch time. Who will he choose now??? I really hope neither. Let's start fresh and new with someone who perhaps hasn't already been in Davis's wheelhouse or in the game to be persuaded and jaded so easily by others. Maybe someone who actually cares about doing what is right for our city without the fear or pressure of who already exists in the political game. We need a new voice, one for the citizens of Elk Grove…someone with our best interest at heart…not their own political agenda. Get involved citizens of Elk Grove, go to the meetings, make your voice count!!!

Let me start by clearly stating I am not a Gary Davis supporter.

However, I am tired of reading people say how Davis doesn't think of the City and has no regard for the residents but then slam him for not sticking with Chaires. In this lone instance, I think Davis actually went away from his scripted political life and considered that Chaires was not going to be appointed and that a $500,000 special election was not in the best interest of the city.

Regardless of how Trigg has turned out, I believe Davis made the right choice of not forcing the special election on us.

Now it all would have been a mute point if Davis had just resigned before the election so that the voters could have elected his replacement during the normal election cycle but his ego would not allow that to happen.

Same scenerio happening again this year with Mr. Cooper. Rules need to be changed....you run for another political seat, you resign from the one you now hold. Much like the EGUSD and Mr. Lys likely run for city council. Only fair for the taxpayers of this city...take your ego somewhere else!
