Ly Files Papers to Challenge Chaires for Elk Grove City Council Seat

Current Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) Trustee Steve Ly has filed papers with the Elk Grove City Clerk's office stating his intent to run for the Elk Grove City Council District 4 seat.
Ly, who won his seat on the EGUSD in 2012 in a landslide victory, is the second candidate to file papers for the seat that is currently held by Bob Trigg. The other candidate is fellow Democrat and current Elk Grove Planning Commissioner, Nancy Chaires.
The District 4 seat was occupied by Mayor Gary Davis until late 2012, but was vacated with his election as the city's first directly elected mayor. Chaires, who sought the appointment early last year was initially supported by Davis and current Elk Grove Vice Mayor Jim Cooper, but was stymied by a 2-2 vote with current council members Steve Detrick and Pat Hume blocking her.
Davis eventually relented on the deadlock and agreed to appoint Trigg with the understanding the former Superintendent of Elk Grove Schools would act as a placeholder until 2014. During the 2012 election, Davis and Ly shared offices and staff in their successful campaigns.
Ly did not respond to inquiries regarding his candidacy.

If I were Steve Ly, I'd watch my back....the last person Davis "supported" got left out in the cold because Davis was outsmarted and out maneuvered by Hume. This situation presents yet another issue for Davis and his Democratic cronies. Nancy Chaires has connections to the State Capitol with her Democratic husband lying the ground work for Ms Chairs to succeed in EG; and Mr. Ly seems to be a close comrade with Davis...sharing office space and no doubt other election related materials/information. So, it looks like more drama is in store for EG for the 2014 election cycle. Small town politics makes for strange bedfellows.
Typically a school board position and city council are stepping stones to bigger political office. Steve must want to move up or between both stipends he can go pro and quit his day job. I love how transperant politics really are. Keep recruiting from the rank and file. It's interesting that in both this election and in the planning commission none of the people that wanted the District 4 seat have jumped into either race. Must be clear that you have to be part of the club to win. This council has no identity, strength or character.
Cheap entertainment--a democratic circular firing squad!
The point about a circular firing squad is very true. This actually provides an opening for someone like Oscar Ocon.
The Democrats will split their votes, be feuding and Oscar can take some of the presumed Latino vote from Chaires. This is an ideal opening for a mainstream Republican. If some unnamed mainstreet, read not a Tea Partier, Republican can sneak in on a three or four way ballot ala Sophia Scherman, the Dems and Republicans can thank Mr. Ly!
And yet while all of this goes on....the Developers continue to have their way with Elk Grove leaders through rezones, general plan amendments to SPA's, reducing developer fees, reduced park size and open spaces, change to the sign ordinance.....elk grove the stepping stone for those who want to move on up the political ladder.
