A reported robbery of Elk Grove resident by a person dressed as an SMUD employee has been discovered to have been a false report, Elk Grove Police investigators have discovered.

On April 10, 55-year old Maya Chima of Elk Grove reported to Elk Grove Police that she was robbed at her residence on the 7600 block of Glenbain Way by a man who gained entry posing as a SMUD employee. As part of their investigation, Elk Grove Police released a composite of a suspect.

According to Elk Grove Police Public Information Office Christopher Trim, investigators have determined Chima fabricated the story.

"Detectives have determined that the "victim" made up the report and that the events described in the release never took place," Trim said in an email. "Once our investigation is complete, we will forward our report to the DA's office, and we will be asking that the DA file charges related to making a false police report.

Trim said at this time investigators are unable to provide additional clarification as to the motivation behind the false report. Under California Penal Code 148.5, filing of a false report is a misdemeanor, and if found guilty, a person could face up to six months in jail.

I am curious what her motivation might have been to conjure this scheme. I doubt we will ever know, but perhaps a visit with a mental health specialist and repaying the city for the expense incurred would better serve society than jail time.
