The City of Elk Grove will hold a workshop to gather public input on a proposed city-run animal shelter.

At the workshop participants can provide feedback on how animal shelter services should operate in the city, and receive information on Elk Grove’s operational and facility options, industry best practices, as well as the outcome of preliminary project data collection.

The meeting is being held in conjunction with the city’s consultants, Indigo I Hammond + Playle Architects, LLP, who are conducting a needs assessment study and the U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

The meeting will be held on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. at Elk Grove City Hall in the Council Chambers located at 8400 Laguna Palms Way in Elk Grove.

The city currently contracts with Sacramento County for animal sheltering services, pet adoptions and licensing at 3839 Bradshaw Road in Sacramento.

For more information about the meeting, contact Kara Reddig, Deputy City Manager, at kreddig@elkgrovecity.org or 478-2249. For more information about Elk Grove’s animal control department, visit www.elkgrovecity.org/animals.

I guess we wore out the word "feasibility" study; now we are calling it "assessment" study. I can't remember the cost of this study, but it had to be at least $25 or $35K.

Given a choice, I wonder how the voters of Elk Grove would like to spend their money? Soccer stadium? Soccer complex? Or an animal shelter?

For the cost of a soccer stadium, we could easily pay for the other two and have money left over to repave our city's streets and then some. We heard a report from Public Works Director Richard Shepard there is no money in public works for road improvements and the Council wouldn't entertain a sales tax increase.

A city with an excellent quality of life, and in order to draw new businesses and residents, must have not only safe streets, but streets that are well maintained and paved.

Case in point and this is a NIMBY thing: Have you driven on Waterman Road between Sheldon and Elk Grove Blvd lately? Front end alignment needed on my SUV every time I do go BelAir!

Connie;

Don't worry about the repair of the roads.

Our esteemed leaders will float a bond measure.

They will stick the taxpayers with a bond measure to fix the roads. They probably already flushed the repair money down the toilet on the Sister City relationship with the Kingdom of Zamunda, the Development Study for the water / scream park in Madeira, the design study for the Octopus City Center, the MLS Taj Mahal Soccer Complex.

Pssssh, this idea isn't big enough. Animal shelters are boring! It should be in the shape of a squid from a world renowned architect, and have a zip line theme park for this baby to sell. Maybe guest appearances from the sister city king from Timbuktu.

This is just sad that the city plays with the residents emotions and has them thinking this will maybe happen. They've got so many irons (feasibility studies & now assessment studies) in the fire it would take more than a century+ to get them all done. Animal Shelter ain't gonna happen!
