In Lead-up to Elk Grove-Folsom Football Championship, Mayor Gary Davis Tweets Challenge

December 2, 2015 |

Taking his cue from Governors and Mayors from states and cities of Super Bowl Bound teams, Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis has issued a challenge to Folsom Mayor Andy Morin.

With this Saturday's football championship game between Elk Grove High School's Thundering Herd and Folsom High School's Bulldogs, Davis took to Twitter Wednesday morning and said he has a friendly wager with Morin - the winner of the gentlemen's bet will have the winning team's pennant fly over the losing team's city hall.

This Saturday's game that is being held at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium will pit two undefeated teams with perfect 13-0 records. The teams met for the San Joaquin Division I Championship in 2012 with the Bulldogs prevailing 44-18.

Davis and Morin have not responded to an email request seeking further comment on the wager. Saturday's game will start at 6 p.m.

Since when does the Mayor of a general law city have the power to make single handed decisions?

What can I say...our Mayor is a media hog! He will do anything to get his name in print. Kinda reminds me of Rahm Emanuel.

Elk Grove is a sports powerhouse and we should be proud that our Mayor recognizes this and promotes us heavily in the press. All of the keys to the City are held by athletes from Elk Grove, we are on the short-list for an MLS soccer team and Olympic swim trials, and we even have Grover our mascot waiting in the wings to go to work!

I don't know about you, but I sleep better at night knowing that someday soon ESPN will recognize Elk Grove as the sports Mecca of our country. And maybe if all goes well, the new Outlet Mall will offer city residents a discount coupon on Elk Grove MLS soccer jerseys and Olympic speedos!
