Anti-Ly group releases follow-up 'Steve Ly Lies' video to attack mailers

October 31, 2018 |

Perhaps the timing was set to coincide with the Halloween festivities, but an independent expenditure committee opposing the candidacy of Steve Ly released a video today.

Paid for by the Alliance to Protect the Middle Class, the video, which can be viewed below, was posted on their Facebook page. The video discusses what they characterize as financial irresponsibility on behalf of Ly, who is the current Elk Grove mayor.

The video comes on the heels of a mailer (above and below) received by many Elk Grove voters in that last several days raising the same questions. In what many political observers believe to be a first in Elk Grove politics, the attack mailer features an image of a candidate's family member, in this case, Ly's wife.

Since the APMC first surfaced over two weeks ago, they have focused their efforts on painting Ly as fiscally irresponsible. Although Ly has not specifically addressed the attacks, in several of his mailers and online videos, Ly has touted his role in producing a balanced budget and a rainy day fund.

The video also suggests because he is not endorsed by any of his city council colleagues "because of his poor judgement and unethical behavior." The video narrations also says Ly would "hire political friends and allies with taxpayer money."

Interestingly, both Ly and the APMC have distorted the mayors' and city council roles in the city's budgetary process. By law, municipalities in California must operate with a balanced budget, and in weak-mayor general law cities like Elk Grove, the overall duty of producing a balanced budget generally falls to the city manager and staff who are provided general guidelines by a city council.

In response to the video, the three candidates for mayor, Ly, Tracie Stafford, and Darren Suen were sent a text message this morning seeking comment on the video.

Ly did not respond to the invitation to comment, and Suen replied but said he had not yet viewed the video. By email, Stafford expressed displeasure with the tone the race has taken because of the APMC.

"These type of attack ads are shameful and have no place appropriate place in Elk Grove elections," Stafford said. "It is an indication of the influence big-monied interests have on our current mayor and city council."
