"Trauma is real. Loss is real. What we are seeing across the country is the reaction to trauma and loss caused by decades-long injustice and inequity in our communities of color, specifically our African-American community. Mr. George Floyd’s death is heartbreaking, appalling, and traumatic. However, this is not just about Mr. George Floyd, but also about Mr. Ahmaud Auberry, Ms. Breonna Taylor, and many others. There are no words to adequately express the outrage and trauma. My deepest condolences to the families for their loss.
Through these challenging and uncertain times, we all need to stand together and bring forth positive change, not just in our city but wherever our path may lead. We must reject hate and injustice in all forms and condemn senseless violence. We must show compassion and empathy to our neighbors, especially when they are suffering. We must seek justice and peace in honor of love and unity.
Elk Grove is our home. We must start at home. We are not perfect, but for the City of Elk Grove, changes are being made in hopes of bettering the future for all residents. I am proud of the work our Police Chief, Elk Grove Police Department, City Manager, and city staff are doing. Most of all, I am very proud of you - Elk Grovians. I am confident that we will listen to learn from each other and act to help the healing in our communities. Together, we will get through this. Together, we will be better as a city, state, and nation."

In reading this message, and many others over the years, we must never forget the unsolved, senseless hate-crime murders of Gurmej Atwal and Surinder Singh.
Elk Grove is not immune. These two grandfathers were just out for an afternoon walk, enjoying their city and each other's company; never to return home again to their families.
