Singh-Allen, Spease take oaths as newest members of Elk Grove City Council

At last night's Elk Grove City Council meeting, two new council members took their positions after they were sworn-in during private ceremonies held earlier in the day.

Assuming her role as the Mayor was Bobbie Singh-Allen, who was sworn by Rep. Ami Bera and District 3 Councilmember Kevin Spease, who took his oath from his wife, Angela Spease. Singh-Allen defeated former Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly and Brian Pastor to becomes the city's first directly elected woman mayor, and Spease won in a five-candidate race to fill the seat vacated by Steve Detrick.

Both Singh-Allen and Spease won their positions with a plurality of votes. Taking the oath for his second full term as the District 1 representative was Darren Suen, who defeated Ali Moua with a majority of votes.

Because of the COVID19 meeting protocols, the ceremonies were closed to the public. Videos of the ceremonies were played during the live teleconference city council meeting.

While Spease and Suen did not have extended commentary accompanying their oaths, Singh-Allen included a seven-minute presentation on her electoral victory. Along with thanking supporters, Singh-Allen said her top priority is to work on an economic recovery following the COVID19 pandemic and recession.

"With this great power comes, great responsibility, and it is time to roll up my sleeves and get to work for the people of Elk Grove," Singh-Allen said.

Spease and Suen will serve four-year terms and Singh-Allen will have a two-year term.

Really? Stealing a line from Spiderman? Someone needs to tell BSA that she has no real power. Her vote carries the same weight as any other council member. I wish her and Spease the best of luck.

Glancing at my campaign flyers, I see that Spease and his nurse advisor were going to let me know when the coast is clear from COVID; and when the coast is clear, Singh-Allen's 5-point traffic plan will help me zip across town to the District56 cafe for a grilled cheese sandwich!

Oh, the Granite Bay developers must be laffin their as*es off! Great Power...right! :)
