Protest planned at Elk Grove Unified by parents demanding reopening of schools, open meetings

Tomorrow night a protest will be held at the administrative offices of Elk Grove Unified School District by a group of parents seeking resumption of in-class instruction.

Organized by a group calling itself the EGUSD Parent Coalition, the protest will be held between 4 and 5:30 p.m. at the district's office at 9510 Elk Grove-Florin Road. The event proceeds the district's regularly scheduled meeting that starts at 6 p.m. that will be broadcast via Zoom.

Along with demands that parents be given the option to choose from in-class or distance instruction, the group has also voiced concern about public meetings that have been conducted via teleconference services such as Zoom. In their statement released today, the group says conducting meetings that are not open to the public is a violation of the Ralph M. Brown Act which dictates how California meetings are conducted.

Their statement read "Since the EGUSD Board Meetings have been placed in a virtual format, the process of the board's work has not been inclusive of the public’s input as it is restricted to written comment submitted in advance, with no timely publication of Agenda items, and most importantly public comment."

More information about the protest is available at egusdparentcoalitionleadership@gmail.com.

I'm so happy to see parents taking action. Organize a large enough group of parents in the school district to all pull their children out of the district. We have the freedom to choose how best to educate our students, so it's your right to essentially fire your school district if they are not doing a satisfactory job. If you get enough parents together, the school district will be forced to take action. It'll affect their funding.
