Former president appears in Sacramento elections: Democratic Sac Sheriff's candidate call opponent 'Trump Republican'

Even though the Sacramento County Sheriff's race is a non-partisan, one candidate portrays his opponent in the most negative way for Democratic voters - linking him to former President Donald Trump.

In a mailer that arrived in mailboxes today, Democratic California Assemblymember Jim Cooper has called his opponent for Sacramento County Sheriff, Undersheriff Jim Barnes a "Trump Republican."

The mailer includes a picture of Barnes in front of a Sacramento County Republican Party banner who appears to be making a presentation. The authenticity or date of the photograph has not been verified.

The headline says, "Jim Barnes is the TRUMP Republican running for Sheriff." Aside from the wording on the banner promoting the Sacramento County Republican party, the mailer makes no further mention of Barnes.

On the flip side, the mailer says, "Jim Cooper is the lifelong Democrat who shares our values." The mailer also included a notable endorsement from  Planned Parenthood and several Democratic elected officials, including Rep. Dr. Ami Bera.

Not surprisingly, Trump will be used by Democratic candidates in races against Republicans, even for non-partisan offices. If Cooper's strategy works and he energizes Democratic voters, it could be a harbinger for other close races in Sacramento County between Democratic and Republican candidates in the November election.
