Dave Jones receives significant endorsement in District 8 State Senate race

UPDATED 7:30 a.m. August 13  |

California State Senate District 8 candidate Dave Jones announced a significant endorsement yesterday.

Jones is facing fellow Democrat Sacramento City Councilmember Angelique Ashby in the November general election, announced District 1 Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna has endorsed his candidacy.

In the announcement, Serna said, "Few people have more consistently and effectively fought for working families than Dave Jones. Dave has dedicated his life and career to helping people and has secured historic investments in vulnerable and under-served neighborhoods. Dave Jones is exactly who we need in the State Senate."

A former Sacramento City Councilmember, California Assembly member, and California Insurance Commissioner, Jones came in first place ahead of Ashby in the June primary. The third candidate in the primary, Democrat Rafa Garcia, who captured 12 percent of the vote, has thrown his support to Jones.

Along with Serna's support, Jones has a lengthy list of labor unions and environmental groups endorsing his campaign. Ashy has been supported by California Assemblymember and Sacramento County Sheriff-elect Jim Cooper, and several business interest groups like Region Business and the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce.

According to Jones, Sacramento County Supervisor District 1 represents 34 percent of California State Senate District 8. Additionally, District 1 overlaps much of Sacramento City Council District 1, which Ashby represents.

UPDATED Our original story incorrectly reported Ms. Ashby had been endorsed by Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg. She has not received Steinberg's endorsement, and the story has been changed to reflect that.
