Remarks from Elk Grove City Councilmember Darren Suen on Sergio Robles' drunk driving arrest

There was a notable absence during the Wednesday, May 24, Elk Grove City Council meeting. The longest-tenured city council member was absent for about the first two hours of the meeting.

Darren Suen, who has been on the city council since 2015, arrived at the meeting after his fellow council members gave their reports following public comment. Typically, city council member comments are the last agenda item on the agenda just before the adjournment, but last night they were moved.

After Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen, Vice Mayor Kevin Spease, and Councilmember Rod Brewer commented on Councilmember Sergio Robles' drunk driving arrest by Elk Grove Police, a brief recess was announced. After reconvening, Suen appeared without explaining his whereabouts during the first two hours.

After the meeting, Suen said he watched the video of his colleague's comments. Suen provided the following remarks on Robles' behavior:

"Whereas I was not able to attend the first portion of the meeting, and the council comment item was moved to the front of the agenda, I was able to watch the video just now and hear my colleagues give their views. Similarly, I am very disappointed in his choice but support his willingness to do better. Luckily for everyone, no one was injured, and no damage to property occurred, which matters."

Robles' troubles started on the evening of Friday, May 19, at the annual AAPI Market Night in downtown Sacramento. Sources have said Robles had VIP access to the event, which included hosted alcoholic drinks.

Social media pictures showed Suen in the company of Robles at the event before sunset. Suen said he saw Robles arrive as he was leaving the event.

Last night Robles continued to stress he was cited and not arrested for drunk driving by Elk Grove Police on the morning of Saturday, May 20. During his comments, Robles did not say he would modify his alcoholic consumption behavior, which has been openly displayed on social media.
