Will the Elk Grove Mayor and City Council follow their rules and censure District 4 City Councilmember Sergio Robles who was arrested for drunk driving. | |
Although it is not on this evening's agenda, the elephant in the room will be the recent arrest by Elk Grove Police of District 4 Elk Grove City Councilmember Sergio Robles.
Arrested early on Saturday, May 20, for DUI, Robles has not denied the charges. As such, Robles is the first Elk Grove City Council member to be arrested and booked into county jail while still in office.
Interestingly, one of the earlier resolutions Elk Grove Bobbie Singh-Allen signed after taking office in December 2020 was Resolution No. 2021-043, establishing a "policy for censure of city councilmembers (see resolution below)." The resolution was unanimously approved.
In part, the resolution says, "A censure is a formal determination by the City Council that another City Councilmember has violated a law, regulation, City policy, the City Code of Ethics, or has engaged in other misconduct while serving as a City of Elk GroveCouncilmember."
The resolution says two council members can initiate the process, and after some administrative steps, the censure request will be placed on a future city council agenda. If the censure request makes it to the agenda, the mayor and city council have several options, including taking no action.
Given how much the mayor and each city council member praise each other and portray themselves as friends, it is worth considering they will not take any action against Robles, the first Elk Grove City Council member arrested while in office for a violation that put the public in danger.
