SEIU Local 2015 making appeal for better wages, working conditions to Sacramento County voters

Even though no elections are in the immediate future for any jurisdiction in Sacramento County, a targeted mailer is taking their case for improved wages for in-home caregivers.

The Service Employers International Union Local 2015 mailer has been distributed recently. An informal survey finds the mailer was sent to registered senior citizen voters and features three testimonies.

While all three testimonies appear to be from people that could be senior citizens, two of them are in-home caregivers and SEIU Local 2015 members.

One of the workers, Estrella Santos of Elk Grove, notes she loves providing care for her clients. However, she adds, "The pay is not enough to cover my expenses."

While the mailer emphasizes care for senior clients, the in-home caregivers also provide services for a broad range of individuals with disabilities through the In-Home Supportive Services program. The IHHS caregivers, most of whom are women of color, provide tasks including bathing, dressing, eating, cleaning, and cooking.

Members of SEIU 2015 and their clients have frequently appeared before the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors seeking improved wages. See two of the people speaking to the supervisors in the video below.

The entire mailer received by Sacramento County voters can be seen below the videos.
