A longtime fixture in Elk Grove's political world announced that she would not seek another term on the Florin Resources Conservation District, the Elk Grove Water District owner. That announcement by FRCC Director Sophia Scherman came at the conclusion of last night's regular meeting.
Scherman, a longtime Elk Grove resident, was first elected to the Elk Grove Community Services District (now the Cosumnes Community Services District) Board of Directors in 1994. Following Elk Grove's 2000 charter, Scherman elected to the first five-member city council, coming in third place in a 20-plus candidate field.
Scherman entered Elk Grove politics during the 1990s. |
Scherman served on the city council until 2012 when a voter-approved, directly elected mayor led to a redistricting that eliminated one of the five city council districts. With her residency overlapping with former Elk Grove City Councilmember Pat Hume, Scherman ran for Mayor in 2012, losing in the five-candidate field to her city council colleague Gary Davis.
Before running for Mayor in 2012, Sherman was a Republican candidate for the California State Assembly. In the last primary before California switched to the current top-two finishers runoff, Sherman finished fifth in a six-candidate race.
Throughout her career, Scherman was instrumental in mentoring several aspiring Republican politicians. Most notable of her proteges are Sacramento County Supervisor Pat Hume and Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen, who was formerly a Republican.
During her 2014 campaign event for reelection to the Elk Grove Unified School Board District Board of Trustees, Singh-Allen singled out Ms. Scherman for her mentorship in her political career (see video below).
After leaving city office, Scherman was elected to the FRCC in 2016. She easily won reelection in 2020.
Before entering politics, Scherman owned an Elk Grove travel agency. Throughout her business and political career, Scherman has tirelessly advocated for armed service veterans, which led to the inclusion of the city District56 facilities Veterans Hall.
During a city council meeting, one Elk Grove resident urged Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and her council to honor Scherman's numerous community contributions. However, Mayor Singh-Allen has not taken action to honor her mentor.
