Decision to allow more bars in Old Town-Historic Downtown Elk Grove delayed

When the agenda for next Wednesday's Elk Grove City Council meeting is released this afternoon, one item will not be on it. The missing item is proposed changes to the Old Town Special Planning Area that would double the number of drinking establishments in the city's fledgling hipster entertainment district.
A notice released earlier this month said the hearing would be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. The first public hearing on expanding the number of drinking establishments was held during the city council's November 13 meeting.
During that meeting, Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and the city council were criticized for not having the proposed changes, which could double the number of bars in Old Town-Historic Downtown Elk Grove, reviewed by the city's Historic Preservation Committee. One person who spoke during the meeting was historic committee member Peggy Forseth-Andrew.
"What I am here to ask you to do is to please wait on making a decision," Ms. Forseth-Andrew said during the November 11 meeting. "To not bring this before the Historic Preservation Committee for their review and their comments, in my opinion, is disrespectful to the committee."
At that meeting, the mayor and city council instructed city staff to present the matter to the historic committee. The committee will hear the matter during its December 9 meeting.

For years, the Elk Grove Historic Preservation Commission has been viewed as a throne in the side of the profiteers and this slight delay, while unanticipated, will not slow the development of Old Town's gaslamp district. Just as the Mayor has done with most of the other City Commissions, I would not be surprised to see her request that each member of the HPC re-submit their applications. Adios old-timers. Hello money!
