So far, Elk Grove not following Trump's directions, edicts to abandon DEI programming
Among the many events that have swept the United States since Donald Trump took the oath of office a month ago has been the large-scale abandonment of DEI programs. Among large multinational corporations following Trump's example and dropping their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs are Amazon, Meta (Facebook), Target, Walmart, and McDonald's.
Furthermore, the administration has indicated intentions to influence state and local governments regarding their DEI initiatives. The Department of Education has warned academic institutions that continuation of DEI programs could result in federal funding cuts.
Additionally, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a memorandum pausing the disbursement of federal grants and loans to prevent funding for DEI programs. However, this action faced legal challenges and was temporarily blocked by federal courts.
These actions suggest a concerted effort by the Trump administration to leverage federal funding to pressure state and local governments into discontinuing DEI programs. While direct enforcement at the state and city level is constitutionally limited, the threat of withholding federal funds serves as a significant incentive for local governments to align with federal policies.
Whether they like it or not, the city of Elk Grove could be forced by Trump to drop its DEI posture if it wants to continue receiving funding from programs like Community Development Block Grants. The video below shows the current DEI information on the city's website.
At some point, Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and her city council may have to make a decision bowing to Trump to keep the federal money flowing or take a defiant stance.
What do you think the Mayor will decide to do?
