Longtime observers of the Elk Grove City Council undoubtedly know this about the longest-tenured current city council member, Darren Suen - he is never one to turn down a free meal!

This was again verified by Suen's filing late last month of his annual California Form 700, Statement of Economic Interest. According to the filing, the District 1 representative accepted meals or tickets on seven occasions from five entities.

Those gifts include:
  • January 11, food and entertainment, valued at $109.61, from CA Tribal Business Alliance
  • February 2, Member fundraiser, valued at $200, from Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen
  • March 4, Sacramento Kings ticket, valued at $300, from Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen
  • May 8, Host Breakfast, valued at $60.72, from CalChamber
  • June 6, Dinner, valued at $85, from Asian Peace Officers Association
  • June 22, Two tickets to Summer Solstice valued at $450, from PG&E
  • December 2, Legislative Reception valued at $50, from CalChamber
The gifts from Assemblymember Nguyen were accepted while he was employed as her chief of staff. Suen was separated from that job on August 31.

The statement also listed campaign consulting fees between $10,001 and $100,000 Suen received from Assemblymember Nguyen.

Hell, he just gave himself and his co-councilmembers a 320% raise! He's taking advantage of his title. Looks like he's preparing to run for Congress. He's working the system like a pro.... to the detriment of his constituents, unfortunately. He needs to go and he needs to be defeated when he runs for higher office. We need people who work FOR us, not take advantage of us.

Not too worried about the Kibbles N' Bits Suen eats. I just want sound leadership and question the herd mentality of the Mayor and her City Council.
