Elk Grove's Cooper Joins Chorus Calling for UC Davis' Katehi’s Resignation

March 17, 2016

California Assembly Member Jim Cooper (D -Elk Grove) has joined a chorus of officials calling for UC Davis' Chancellor Linda Katehi's resignation.

Katehi has been the subject of recent student protests and sit-ins on the UC Davis campus and calls for her resignation after it was revealed she was a board member of the for-profit DeVry Education Group. As a board member of a company that has been accused  of a variety of predatory practices and misleading claims, Katehi earned $70,000 annual.

In addition to serving for DeVry, Katehi also received $420,000 over three years serving as board member of John Wiley & Sons, a college textbook publisher.

“It saddens me to think that while our students are strapped with student debt to pay for the astronomical prices of college textbooks, Chancellor Katehi in a clear conflict of interest received $420,000 from the same textbook publishers that are exploiting our students," Cooper said. "On top of receiving inappropriate outside compensation, Chancellor Katehi was also engaged with the DeVry Education Group Board, a for-profit university which is under federal investigation for false claims regarding their students.

Cooper joins fellow Assembly Members Kevin McCarthy (D - Sacramento) and Evan Low (D - San Jose) calling for Katehi's resignation.

This on top of pepper spraying the students protesting peacefully means it is time for her to move on.

Look who is calling the kettle black:

Excerpt Sac Bee:

"Seeking to impart lessons from Australia’s 15-year “millennium drought,” the nonprofit California Foundation on the Environment and the Economy is paying for a handful of lawmakers to fly across the world during the Legislature’s spring recess next week. They’ll be joined by various interest group representatives.

The organization sponsored a drought-focused Australia trip last year as well. This year’s participants are Sen. Bob Wieckowski, D-Fremont, and Assemblymen Rob Bonta, JIM COOPER, Jimmy Gomez, Christopher Holden, Evan Low and Rudy Salas.

And he went on the Hawaii junket paid for by special interests as well. Looks like Jimbo is fitting in well with the other career politicians in Sacramento.
