UPDATED 3 p.m.

In a Zoom broadcast of the opening and counting of mailed-in ballots, several candidates, including two for the Elk Grove City Council, earned endorsements of the Elk Grove-South County Democratic Club last night.

The two candidates, Ali Moua and Maureen Craft were competing respectively with Elk Grove City Councilmember Darren Suen and candidate Amandeep Singh for endorsements in the District 1 and 3 contests.

In the District 1 competition, Moua easily won capturing 61 of the club votes to Suen's four. Moua and Suen are the only two candidates as of today filed to run in that race.

"I would like to thank the club members for their support," Moua said after receiving the endorsement. "Without their voices, this endorsement could not have happened."

In the more competitive contest for the District 3 endorsement saw Craft gather 48 votes to Singh's 19. The two Democrats are competing to fill the open seat.

Along with Craft and Singh, there are four other candidates, including Independent Lynn Wheat and Republican Kevin Spease seeking the seat being vacated by three-term councilmember Steve Detrick. The party affiliation of two late entrants into the race, Daron Whitley and Alejandro Gutierrez-Duncan is unknown.

Thank you to Elk Grove South County Democratic Club for your endorsement," Craft said after receiving the nod. "Your vote of confidence is priceless."

Although Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly now faces an intra-party challenge from Bobbie Singh-Allen, she entered the race after the club's endorsement process started and did not appear on the ballot. Ly, who has four formalized challengers as of today, was unopposed and won the club's endorsement.

For their victories, Craft and Moua will each receive $300 donations from the club.

The club also formalized endorsements for several candidates who were unopposed in the endorsement process. Those individuals include the following:
  • Orlando Fuentes, Cosumnes Community Services District
  • Regina Banks, Elk Grove Unified School District Area 1
  • Sean "Xiong" Yang, Elk Grove Unified School District Area 3
  • Nancy Chaires Espinoza, Elk Grove Unified School District Area 6
  • Gregg Fishman, Sacramento County Supervisor District 3
Updated to include quote from Maureen Craft.
