Eric Guerra drops out of State Senate race, enters Assembly contest for 10th District

Sacramento City Councilmember Eric Guerra has reportedly dropped out of the race for the California State Senate and is entering the contest for the California Assembly.

Guerra, who represents Sacramento's 6th city council district, had declared his candidacy for the 8th Senate District last January. Since then, three fellow Democratic candidates entered the race, including Sacramento Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby and former Assemblymember and California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jone hoping to succeed Dr. Richard Pan, who will be termed out.

The newly configured 10th Assembly district includes south Sacramento and Elk Grove. The 10th district now has portions of the current 9th district represented by Democrat Jim Cooper and the 7th district represented by Kevin McCarty.

With the new boundaries, McCarty, who currently resides in the new 10th district, said he will move to the 6th district in north Sacramento and will run for reelection there. Cooper is expected to announce his candidacy for the Sacramento County Sheriff, thereby creating an open seat in the 10th district had he decided to seek reelection to the Assembly.

Guerra's entry into the Assembly races marks the first major candidate declaring their candidacy. Other Democratic candidates, including Elk Grove City Councilmember Stephanie Nguyen, had expressed interest in the race but deferred their announcement until Cooper formally entered the Sacramento County Sheriff race.

Guerra told TV News10, "I am excited to run in a district whose constituents so perfectly mirror my own personal story. I grew up as a first-generation immigrant working in the fields from the age of 5."

With his entry into the Assembly race, Guerra has a significant financial advantage leading to the June 7 primary. According to financial disclosures filed with the California Secretary of State, his senate campaign committee has $301,591 as of June 30, the end of the last reporting period.
