Circuit City files Chapter 11, third large retailer in Elk Grove hurt by soft economy

This morning Richmond, Va.-based Circuit City declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Circuit City operates one store in Elk Grove on Laguna Blvd.

Circuit City said in the filing that no additional stores would be closed. Last week the electronics retailer closed 155 stores in an effort to stay afloat during the crucial Holiday shopping season.

In the last several weeks, the Elk Grove retail market has been hit hard by the announced liquidation of Mervyn's and Linens 'n Things. With the liquidations, there will be two large empty retail spaces in Elk Grove on top of several vacant never-occupied retail spaces.

On the plus side, the Circuit City expects to continue operations at least through the Holiday season.
