With the economy and real estate in the tank, city needs to plan now for rainy day

With the historic elections of 2008 behind us, the time has come for all elected leadership from the President on down to our own Elk Grove city council to start facing the tough economic reality we find ourselves in.

We all know the tough decisions President-elect Obama will face the moment he takes office. It is fair to say this is one the toughest situations a new president finds himself in a generation.

For Elk Grove, this is no doubt the toughest economy our city has see in it's eight short years.

While the tough decision facing Washington might mot seem to matter locally, they do. Just think about the mortgage foreclosure crisis and how much impact it has already had on our city.

The continued real estate slump, jump in unemployment and the anticipated Holiday sales slump will all take their toll on the finances of Elk Grove. Moving past the excitement of electing a new member, the Elk Grove city council has it's cut out for them over the next couple of years.

The decisions they make will set the path for much of Elk Grove's future. Let's hope they work together and identify hurdles and address them before they become fiscal nightmares.
