City to consider acceptance of grant for domestic violence intervention; no November surprise this post-election

The Elk Grove city council will see a full agenda when it convenes it's first post-election meeting tomorrow night. The regular meeting starts at 6:00 pm at city hall.

Among the many items the council will hear is whether or not to accept a $248,612 grant from the U.S. Dept. of Justice for the development of a domestic violence response team. Like many communities, Elk Grove appears to have experienced an increased incidence of domestic violence as the country has slipped into recession.

The meeting will be possibly one of the last meetings for Mike Leary. Leary will not be returning for a third term after being handily defeated by challenger Steve Detrick. Council members Jim Cooper and Sophia Scherman successfully defended their seats and were reelected to third terms.

November surprise?

Readers may recall that in the first post-election meeting in 2006 then city manager John Danielson and then city attorney Anthony Manzanetti were granted lifetime medical benefits as part of a separation package. Two member of the council, Dan Briggs and Rick Soares, pushed the package even though they were defeated in their respective reelection bids the prior day.

A review of tomorrows agenda does not reveal any such last minute initiative by a lame-duck council member.
